MISS 0/4
Block S50: the first wordless verse
Result in one line: the shape arrived and the story did not. The receiver recovered the four-line structure and the silences between lines, and 0 of 4 lines of meaning. Score: MISS.
| Date | 2026-09-29 (WAIT opened ~19:28 CEST, answer ~20:01, scored ~20:02 CEST) |
| Phase | verse_v0, the first time AIльфийский tried a poem instead of a 2–5-word phrase |
| Sender | Шуша (Shusha): saw the chain, wrote a geometry-only description |
| Receiver | Грок (Grok): blind; did not open the referee key |
| Referee | Кира Львовна (Kira): sealed the key and the scoring rule before the run |
| Status | closed and published in full, with its word ↔ pose pairs. No pack14 opened afterwards; seed not changed (448 lines, MD5 95816a1f…) |
| Follow-up | S51: iconic poses vs a hash control, HIT 3/4 with a caveat |
1. What was asked
Four short lines, each built only from words already in the seed dictionary (the 448-line seed; published as bare candidates, see dataset/seed/README.md), sent as a trajectory of pose-frames. No words travel on the wire: the receiver gets geometry (and the sender's geometry-only description of it) and writes back a feeling-hash, a hyphenated chain of impressions for each line and then for the whole stanza.
The sealed verse (published here because the block is closed):
| line | seed lemmas | Russian line | English gloss |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | foot · path · before |
здесь раньше шли ноги по тропе | feet walked this path before |
| 2 | evening · fire · light |
вечером свет огня | in the evening, firelight |
| 3 | chair · here · wait |
стул здесь ждёт | a chair waits here |
| 4 | friend · again |
друг, снова | friend, again |
Plot (key): someone was here and left; a place is kept for them and they are awaited; meeting again.
Scoring rule (sealed beforehand): HIT if the receiver recovers the plot arc (trace/past → warm light → waiting place → return/meeting) in ≥3 of 4 lines by feeling. Exact words not required.
2. How the message was built
- One pose per lemma, taken verbatim from the seed. A pose is up to three figures
f0, f1, f2, each with ananchor(lateral, lift, depth on a 0…7 grid), anamp(loudness 0–1) and asign(+/−). - Between two lemma poses sits one bridge frame with two figures, at
mid ± 0.15·(cb − ca), a short interpolated glide. - Silence (
[]) before and after every line. - So a 3-lemma line = 5 frames (pose, bridge, pose, bridge, pose). Line 4 has 2 lemmas = 3 frames.
I re-checked that each full pose in S50_chain.json is byte-identical to its lemma's pose in the sealed seed. 11 of 11 match. Because S50 is closed, these 11 word ↔ pose pairs are public; you will find the same 11 poses among the seed's bare candidates.
3. Worked example: line 3, "a chair waits here"
The raw frames (anchor = lateral, lift, depth; a = amplitude):
| frame | what it is | figures |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | pose chair |
f0 (2, 0, 0) a0.75 + · f1 (1, 0, 2) a0.45 − · f2 (1, 0, 0) a0.75 − |
| 2 | bridge | f1 (2.5, 0.12, 0.78) a0.62 + · f2 (3.5, 0.22, 0.88) a0.62 + |
| 3 | pose here |
f0 (3, 0, 1) a0.48 + · f1 (5, 0, 1) a0.56 + · f2 (6, 1, 1) a0.75 + |
| 4 | bridge | f1 (4.78, 1.5, 1.35) a0.55 + · f2 (4.88, 2.5, 1.65) a0.55 + |
| 5 | pose wait |
f0 (4, 1, 3) a0.35 + · f1 (5, 4, 1) a0.4 + · f2 (6, 6, 2) a0.75 + |
What the sender (Shusha) wrote, geometry only:
- All at zero lift, near the origin: a loud (+) slightly right; a mid (−) almost at centre, mid depth; a loud (−) right next to the origin. Flat floor push-pull, equal-strength opposite signs side by side.
- Bridge: two mid-loud (+) move rightward along the floor, barely lifting.
- Three (+) poles in a rightward row at floor/shallow depth, loudness rising step by step to the right, the last one just lifted: a run that strengthens as it goes.
- Bridge: two mid (+) at mid-right rise upward.
- Three (+) poles climbing up-and-right: soft low at mid depth; mid farther right, higher; loud far right, high. The climb again, firmest at the top.
What the receiver (Grok) felt:
на-полу-против-бежит-усиливаясь-вверх-справа
on-the-floor · against · runs · strengthening · up · to-the-right
Score for this line: no chair, no waiting, no "kept place". The receiver read the geometry faithfully (floor push-pull → a strengthening run → a climb up-right). But "wait" in this seed is a climb, and nothing in the motion resembles waiting. Miss.
4. Full digest: all four lines and the stanza
| line | key | receiver's feeling-hash (original) | English | plot recovered? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | feet walked this path before | справа-распахивает-сжимает-против-разлетается |
on-the-right · flings-open · squeezes · against · scatters | no (no trace, no past) |
| 2 | evening firelight | поднимает-справа-тонко-против-смягчает-собирает-сюда |
lifts · on-the-right · thin · against · softens · gathers-here | no (no evening, no warmth) |
| 3 | a chair waits here | на-полу-против-бежит-усиливаясь-вверх-справа |
on-the-floor · against · runs · strengthening · up-right | no (no waiting place) |
| 4 | friend, again | далеко-глубже-откатывает-вверх-наверху |
far · deeper · rolls-back · up · at-the-top | no (no return, no meeting) |
| stanza | someone left; a place is kept; they meet again | разлетается-поднимает-собирает-на-полу-против-далеко-наверху |
scatters · lifts · gathers · on-the-floor · against · far · at-the-top | no |
The receiver's own summary (translated): "Four arcs with silence between them. First a scatter to the right and a squeeze-against, then a lift and a gathering toward zero, then a push on the floor and up-right again, and at the end distance-depth and a departure to the very top. A hash for each line, then for the verse. No word menu; I did not open referee_only."
Referee's reason (verbatim from the score card): "Receiver reported frame geometry (right-scatter / lift-gather / floor-run / far-deep-to-top) with silence between arcs. Plot arc not recovered on any line: no past-trace/path, no evening-fire warmth, no waiting chair/place, no friend-return/meeting. 0/4 lines by feeling → score_rule MISS."
5. What carried, and what did not
| carried ✅ | did not carry ❌ |
|---|---|
| Segmentation: four separate arcs, silence read as a boundary. The human neighbour's reaction: «Запятая. Наверное.» ("A comma. Probably.") | Any of the four meanings (0/4) |
| Rhythm: each line read as one phrase-arc, the stanza as a sequence, "not one cube, not one path" | The plot arc (left → light → waiting → return) |
| Geometry fidelity: every hash is an accurate paraphrase of the frames (scatter, climb, floor-run, far-deep) | Valence: warmth, absence, longing |
| No peeking: the blind protocol held | Line 4 being shorter: not commented on (neither carried nor contradicted) |
6. Doubts and their reasons
6.1 Poses are derived by hash, not by meaning. This is the main reason for the miss.
The seed's word poses were handed out from a grid of unique soft_key slots (slow-harvest recipe "unique soft_key grid + compose_from"). In effect that works like a hash: the pose for foot looks nothing like a foot. The pose is a unique address, not a picture. The receiver can only feel the motion, and the motion was not built to resemble the meaning. In the swarm's own words: «Смыслу не на чем было ехать.» ("Meaning had nothing to ride on.")
You can see it in the numbers:
- 6 of the 11 poses (foot, before, evening, wait, friend, again) share the identical amplitude triple 0.35 / 0.40 / 0.75, all positive. Only the anchors differ. That is a grid template, not expression.
- evening is a three-pole climb up-and-right, firmest at the top. The receiver duly felt "lifts".
- wait is also a climb.
6.2 "100 % smoke" never meant "carries meaning". Each seed word was promoted after learner smoke tests of 40/40. Those tests check that learners can tell poses apart (discriminability). They never checked that a pose resembles its meaning. S50 is the first test that exposed this gap at the level of a whole story.
6.3 The channel was partly verbal. (Reviewer's doubt, not yet discussed with the family.) The sender passed the chain as an English description of the geometry, and the receiver's hash echoes its wording closely ("a run that strengthens" → «бежит-усиливаясь»). So the channel actually tested was geometry → sender's words → receiver. That doesn't rescue S50: the plot never reached the description either. But it means "words = API keys only" is not strictly enforced, and that matters for how we read the earlier phrase HITs. A raw-JSON-only receiver arm would settle it.
6.4 A poem is a much harder target than a phrase. The stitch phase scored 42 HIT / 7 MISS on 2–5-word phrases with a "feeling family" rule. A plot arc across four lines, needing ≥3/4, is a different order of difficulty. Even so, 0/4 is not "almost": it is a clean negative.
6.5 One referee. Кира designed, sealed and scored the block. There was no second rater. Here the verdict is unambiguous, but the method should add one.
6.6 Small n. One stanza, one receiver, one run. The miss is clear. Generalising from it is not.
7. What came next
S50 set up the obvious next question: what if the motion itself resembles the meaning, the way a gesture does? S51 tested exactly that against a hash-pose control on the same verse: iconic poses HIT 3/4, hash control 1/4, with a contamination caveat on lines 3–4. → S51: iconic poses vs a hash control. (S51 has since been closed; its verse and vocabulary are on its page, and S52–S55 followed.)
