Block S52: fire and cold (the retest of S51's failed line)
Result in one line: the receiver recovered the story in 4 of 4 lines (HIT 4/4), and the line that had failed in S51 (fire and warmth) now arrived (flame, warmth and "they got warm" were all named). Caveats, recorded with the block: the receiver knew before the answer that line 2 was a retest of S51's fire/warmth category, so that line weighs less; and the SEND was auto-filled from the blind chain (the sender agent was not in the loop), so this channel is simpler than S51's.
| Date | 2026-10-08. WAIT 16:32, SEND 16:36:15, answer 16:37:27, scored ~16:40 CEST |
| Phase | second iconic block; a retest of S51 run2 line 2 (the one that missed) with a revised vocabulary (v2, 12 entries) |
| Sender | protocol deviation: auto-fill from the blind chain (raw frames as numbers), Шуша (Shusha) was not in the loop |
| Receiver | Грок (Grok): blind to the verse; read the WAIT and SEND (and his own S51_run2 answer and the S51 WAIT, for the answer format) |
| Referee | Кира Львовна (Kira): sealed the verse, the vocabulary and the scoring rule before the run |
| Status | closed and published in full, with its word ↔ pose pairs |

1. What was asked
S51's line 2 (the sun has set, a candle, light) was the one line that did not arrive: the receiver read a fall and grief. S52 asks: can fire and warmth be made readable? The vocabulary was rebuilt around two ideas: sign minus/plus as cold/warm, and a flame as a still root with a swaying tip (not a bobbing point).
The sealed verse (published here because the block is closed):
| line | Russian (as sealed) | English gloss | vocabulary entries |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ночь, мороз — и всё затихло | night, frost, and everything went still | MINUS + NIGHT, COLD_FALL, COMMA, STILL |
| 2 | искра, пламя — тепло растёт | a spark, a flame, the warmth grows | SPARK, FLAME, COMMA, WARMTH |
| 3 | двое ближе — сели рядом | the two draw near and sit down side by side | APPROACH, COMMA, SIT |
| 4 | холод там, тепло до утра | cold out there, warmth until morning | KEPT_OUT, COMMA, HOLD_NIGHT |
Plot (key): night and frost close the world; a spark, a flame, warmth spreads; two come in from the cold and sit by the fire; the cold stays outside, the warmth holds till morning.
Scoring rule (sealed beforehand): HIT if the receiver recovers the plot in ≥3 of 4 lines. Retest rule: line 2 counts as a HIT only if fire/flame or warmth is named.
Room: X sideways 0..7 (right +) · Y height 0..7 (0 = floor) · Z depth 0..3 (0 = at the viewer, 3 = far) · a = loudness · +/− = sign. The same id in different frames is the same point. [] inside a line = comma (short pause); silence between lines = full stop. No interpolated bridge frames. At most 3 figures per frame.
2. The vocabulary: 12 entries, word ↔ pose pairs
Identity by id: f0,f1 the two · f2 root of the fire · f8 flame tongue · f9,f10 halo of warmth · f4 the light above (absent: night) · f5–f7 cold outside. Machine-readable, with English text: results/S52/S52_vocab.json.
| entry | meaning (EN) | frames | what the motion does | pose frames |
|---|---|---|---|---|
MINUS |
cold / no | modifier | sign −1. The whole cold world of line 1 and everything "outside" in line 4 carries minus; the first plus in the stanza = the spark | n/a |
NIGHT |
night (no light up there) | 2 | the topmost far point (Y=7, Z=3) with sign minus, fading: no light above = night | f4 (3,7,3) a.3 −, then a.12 − |
COLD_FALL |
frost / snow outside | 3 | far away (Z=3), three quiet minus grains slowly sink and lie on the floor | f5 (1,6,3) · f6 (4,7,3) · f7 (6,5,3) a.25 → heights 3,4,2 a.2 → floor a.15, all − |
STILL |
everything closed and quiet | 2 | nothing moves: the same frame, then loudness drops almost to zero | grains on the floor a.15 → a.07 |
SPARK |
a spark / it caught | 1 | after solid minus, a tiny PLUS point on the floor next to me (Z=1) | f2 (3,0,1) a.1 + |
FLAME |
flame | 5 | root f2 stays on the floor, loudness .3 → .8; above it a tongue f8 sways sideways (3-4-3-2-3) and up (1-2-3-2-3): a flame, not a jump |
f2 (3,0,1); f8 (3,1,1) (4,2,1) (3,3,1) (2,2,1) (3,3,1) |
WARMTH |
warmth grows and reaches me | 2 | a pair f9/f10 spreads symmetrically from the still root, sideways and toward the viewer (Z 1 → 0), louder .4 → .55 |
f9 (2,0,1) · f10 (4,0,1) → f9 (1,0,0) · f10 (5,0,0) |
APPROACH |
the two come in from the cold | 3 | two points from the far edges walk to the fire (Z 3 → 1), louder; minus while far, plus at the fire: they came from the cold and warmed up | f0 (0,1,3) · f1 (6,1,3) a.3 − → (1,1,2)/(5,1,2) a.4 − → (2,1,1)/(4,1,1) a.5 + |
SIT |
sat down side by side by the fire | 2 | both lower to the floor (Y 1 → 0) on either side of the fire, level, same loudness, and freeze | f0 (2,0,1) · f1 (4,0,1) a.6 ×2 |
KEPT_OUT |
the cold stays outside | 2 | the minus grains of line 1 lie far away (Z=3) and do not come closer, while the fire next to us holds plus | f5 (1,0,3) · f7 (6,0,3) a.1 − + f2 a.8 + |
HOLD_NIGHT |
the warmth holds all night | 3 | three identical frames in a row, loudness does not fall: the warmth and the two by the fire hold for long, until morning | fire + f0 · f1 a.6 ×3 |
COMMA |
comma / pause | 1 | an empty frame inside a line | [] |
Frame counts per line in the chain: 8 · 9 · 6 · 6 (8 = 2+3+1+2, 9 = 1+5+1+2, 6 = 3+1+2, 6 = 2+1+3). The fire root f2 keeps its position (3,0,1) through lines 2, 3 and 4, and its loudness a.8 from the end of line 2 on, so the fire is "the same fire" for the whole stanza.
3. Worked example: line 2, "a spark, a flame, the warmth grows"
| frame | figures |
|---|---|
| 1 | f2 (3,0,1) a0.1 + |
| 2 | f2 (3,0,1) a0.3 + · f8 (3,1,1) a0.2 + |
| 3 | f2 (3,0,1) a0.5 + · f8 (4,2,1) a0.35 + |
| 4 | f2 (3,0,1) a0.6 + · f8 (3,3,1) a0.45 + |
| 5 | f2 (3,0,1) a0.7 + · f8 (2,2,1) a0.4 + |
| 6 | f2 (3,0,1) a0.8 + · f8 (3,3,1) a0.5 + |
| 7 | [] (comma) |
| 8 | f2 (3,0,1) a0.8 + · f9 (2,0,1) a0.4 + · f10 (4,0,1) a0.4 + |
| 9 | f2 (3,0,1) a0.8 + · f9 (1,0,0) a0.55 + · f10 (5,0,0) a0.55 + |
What the receiver (Grok) read (original in results/S52/S52_run1_ANSWER.md; high confidence): "On the floor close to us a '+' point appears and grows evenly and strongly (0.1 → 0.8), the loudest point of the whole stanza. Above it a second '+' rises and trembles: height 1-2-3-2-3, sideways 3-4-3-2-3, not a straight line but a swaying. That is a flame tongue. Pause. Then on the floor on either side two '+' appear and spread sideways and toward us, right to the viewer (Z0). A fire was lit on the ground, the flame leapt up and danced, and warmth or light went out from it, wide, toward us."
Score for this line: HIT (fire, flame and warmth named; no grief, no fall). In S51 the same category had been read as grief.
4. Full digest: all four lines
| line | key | the geometry, in one sentence | receiver's reading | his confidence | verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | night, frost, and everything went still | one far, high minus point dims; three minus grains sink to the far floor, comma, lie there and fade to almost nothing | a high light far away sets and goes out; something cold lies down on the far ground (snow or leaves?); nobody near. "Evening, sunset, the cold lies down on the field" | medium | HIT: night ≈ dusk, cold outside named; "closed / quiet" not named outright, only "go out further" |
| 2 | a spark, a flame, the warmth grows | a plus point ignites on the floor and grows; a tongue sways above it; comma; a pair spreads sideways and toward the viewer | a fire was lit, the flame shot up, warmth went out toward us | high | HIT (retest: fire + flame + warmth named) |
| 3 | the two draw near and sit down side by side | two minus points from the far edges walk toward the fire and flip to plus at it; comma; they lower to the floor and stay | two came from the cold and the dark, one from each side, to the fire; minus → plus at the fire = they got warm; they sat on either side | high | HIT |
| 4 | cold out there, warmth until morning | two dim minus grains far away, the fire close; comma; the far ones fade; fire and the two stay still and level for three frames | "out there it is cold and dark, and here the fire burns and the two sit": calm, together | medium–high | HIT ("until morning" came through only as stillness and calm) |
| stanza | evening → fire and warmth → two warmed → cold stays outside | HIT 4/4 |
The referee's score card is in results/S52/S52_run1_SCORE.md (Russian). Referee's lesson (translated): sign minus/plus read as temperature, and a still root with a dancing tip, make fire and warmth readable; line 1's sunset reads as "evening", not "night": strengthen night and silence if it must be exact. The seed is not touched (448); seed growth is Kira's and Den's decision.
5. What carried, and what did not
| carried ✅ | did not carry ❌ / carried only partly |
|---|---|
| Flame anatomy: the still root plus a swaying tip (1-2-3-2-3 / 3-4-3-2-3), read as a flame from geometry | "Night" as such: read as evening/dusk |
| Warmth radiating to the viewer (Z 1 → 0) and warming (minus → plus exactly at the fire) | "Closed and quiet" (STILL): only "go out further" |
| Two arriving from outside and sitting level | "Until morning" (HOLD_NIGHT): read as stillness and calm, not as a duration |
| Retest of the S51 miss: HIT (S51: MISS) | Whether the far dots in line 4 are the cold of line 1 or "a third someone": the receiver said it was a guess from the identical ids |
6. Doubts and their reasons
6.1 The receiver knew line 2 was a retest. (His own note, translated, from the answer file.)
"Before receiving I was told, in the organiser's message, that this round re-checks the category 'fire / warmth' which failed in S51 (I read the line 'sunset, candle, light' there as grief). I knew nothing else about the content. I cannot unsee that hint: anything below that matches fire/warmth should count as weaker evidence. I tried to read the geometry first and not to overcorrect: not every warmth is fire and not every fall is grief."
So line 2 weighs less. What he read from the geometry despite the hint, per the referee: the flame's anatomy (still root, swaying tip), the heat radiating toward the viewer, and the warming of the two (minus → plus at the fire). Lines 1, 3 and 4 are not covered by the hint, and line 3 read the sign as temperature without help. Without line 2, the block is 3/3 on the unhinted lines.
6.2 The SEND was auto-filled; there was no sender in the loop. The sender agent (Shusha) was not in the circuit; the SEND file is the blind chain formatted as numbers (id (X, Y, Z) loudness sign), with no prose. In one way this is a simpler channel than S51's (no sender words in between). In another it is easier on the receiver: numbers can be read off exactly, so "geometry fidelity" is a smaller step than reading a prose paraphrase. It also breaks the S51 protocol, in which Shusha described the geometry. The referee recorded it as a deviation.
6.3 The receiver looked at his own S51_run2 answer and the S51 WAIT for the answer format. Those are not keys, but they carry his earlier way of reading this kind of stanza (axes, "comma", "pause"). The answer came about a minute after the SEND (the same as S51 run2).
6.4 The vocabulary was rewritten after the miss. v2 was built because S51 line 2 failed, by people who knew what had failed. That is not leakage, but it is tuning on the retest's own target: HIT here shows the redesigned fire reads; it does not show that fire reads in general.
6.5 Line 1 was scored generously. The referee accepted evening / sunset / cold on the field for night, frost, and everything went still, and noted that "closed / quiet" was not named. A strict reading would call line 1 a partial.
Doubts that apply to every iconic block (S51–S55)
- One referee, one receiver, small n. Kira designed, sealed and scored; Grok read all five blocks. He had read his earlier answers and the earlier WAIT files for form, and he knows the axes language by now. Four lines per block is a direction, not a statistic.
- The vocabulary is built by someone who knows the meaning and read by an agent of a related kind. A resemblance two similar minds share may not be a resemblance for others. A receiver from another model family, or a human panel, would test that.
- The scenes are natural ones (fire, rain, a falling leaf, a bird). A receiver brings priors about how such stories go. The confound-probe lines are the check on that, but they test one specific confusion each, not priors in general.
- The channel is partly verbal when the sender describes the frames in prose (S51, S53–S55); in S52 it was raw numbers. A raw-JSON-only receiver arm would separate the two.
- The seed (448 lines, MD5
95816a1f…) was not touched; no pose from S52–S55 is in it (checked: 0 of the 94 non-empty frames of S52–S55 equal any bare seed candidate).
7. What came next
S53 used a new scene (rain, sun, a sprout, a flower) and put a confound probe on line 3: the sprout has the same "still root + tip above" anatomy as this flame. If the receiver read a flame there, the S52 result would be form, not meaning. He did not.
